David Marquez talks to us about Miles Morales and friends growing one year older, and designing the Ultimate versions of Cloak & Dagger.
Part of all of that is developing an eye for what specific shapes or contours make Miles look like Miles, or make Cyclops look like Cyclops. A big part of that is just understanding, ‘How does the shape of a 10-year-old look different than the shape of a 20-year-old?’ and then making very, very conscious decisions about which of the character designs I was using to make Miles look like Miles that I’m going to change — in very subtle ways — to make him look more like a 20-year-old and less like a 10-year-old.
There’s also the goal of, ‘How did I feel as a 14-year-old versus as a 12-year-old?’ I was very angsty. I’m trying to bring across something of what I remember about being a teenager, and invest that in each of the characters, as well. Miles, throughout all of issue #23, and definitely through #24 and #25 as well, he’s still brooding. A big part of that needs to come across in the art, and I’m trying to drag all of that into my head as I’m drawing.

“Boy’s Mother Killed By Monstrous Spider-man.”
That was the headline for the next day, the next week, on every news medium there was. Though it was leaked that the woman had died in the new Spider-man’s arms, every network made sure it was known that New York’s hearts went out to the young boy and the new Spidey.
Mary Jane went to the funeral went on behalf of the Parker Family, Jessica Drew for the Ultimates, as to not bring any more attention or speculation to Rio Morales’s death. Miles’s had all but shut down his emotions, not a tear or a sniffle escaping his steeled expression as his Abuela read her daughter’s eulogy. Besides, Ganke, who held his hand through the whole thing, was doing enough crying for the both of them.
Miles’s didn’t go to school that next week, staying with Ganke’s mother in the spare room. He only left to eat and bathe, otherwise he kept to himself. Upon his return, he was immediately brought to the the Dean’s office. Condonlonces and sympathies were offered, the week’s worth of schoolwork given a passing mark, and couselling was suggested. The young boy was only half listening, nodding here and there.
The looks and whispers that surrounded him were hardly unnoticable, but Miles was struck in such a daze still that he didn’t even register his best friend’s words of comfort. He was still lost in his own thoughts, the image flashing on repeat in his mind over and ov—
“Miles?” A feminine voice called out to him, interrupting the cycle in his mind.
He turned to see a girl he recognized, she happened to be in a lot of his classes.
“Kate?” His voice was raspy, distant as if it wasn’t really his. The look of worry etched on her face was hard to miss, so he mustered the best smile he could in his position. “You don’t have to look so concerned. I’m f—”
She cut him off with the click of her shoes, closing the distance between them. His eyes went wide when Kate suddenly grabbed the collar of her shirt and pulled him to her.
“Do. not.”
The look of concern was still present, but now her eyes flared with anger and pain. He couldn’t help but notice she was really pretty when she was mad. He averted his eyes, knowing his mind shouldn’t be focusing on such things at a time like this. The next thing he knew though, she had shifted into a tight hug.
“Lo siento. I’m sorry.” She whispered into his ear and his eyes widened for a completely different reason. Did she think this was funny?
He wanted to shove her away, but instead he felt himself not only return the gesture but scrunch up the back of her shirt as his hands balled into halfhearted fists. His knees gave him beneath him and she followed him down, slowly, gently.
“Está bien, estoy aquí. It’s alright, I’m here.”
A week’s worth of tears were finally released as he gave angry cry, Spanish lullabies his mother used to sing echoing in the back of his head.
